This is a Kyousoku a Japanese arm rest for sitting on the floor. This functional armrest helps to rest you back when sitting on the floor for long periods. The Kyousoku usually sits off to one side of a person seated on the floor or on a cushion and may be used to lean on one side or pulled in front to rest both arms. Kyousoku are all hand made with interlocking joints for stability. This one has been reinforced for extra stability. It's made of kiri wood and has been treated to pull the grain out in relief creating a pleasant texture.
This arm rest measures 22" by 9 1/2" by 7 1/4" (56 x 24 x 18 cm) and weighs only 1lb 12oz.
Having been used lovingly and stored for most of that past century, it remains in fine antique condition. Note some minor nicks, scuffs.
