The face reads THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT / BG 1/4 RUPEE BG on a cream ground with decorative guilloche border and 大日本帝國政府 at the base. The reverse carries a 1/4 in blue guilloche. Japan occupied Burma in May 1942 following a rapid campaign that pushed British forces back into India, and issued occupation currency in rupee denominations — the existing monetary unit of British Burma — to integrate the territory into the Japanese-controlled Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. The BG block designation is associated with the Burmese issue; some scholars also associate BG with Bengal, where these notes also circulated near the front lines of the India-Burma theater.

Denomination: 1/4 Rupee

Issuer: The Japanese Government, Burma occupation

Block: BG (Burma/Bengal)

Date: 1942

Size: 133 × 67 mm

Condition: Circulated — fold lines, toning, and light soiling; minor staining to reverse.
