The piece is organized in two functional zones. The upper section carries two large sliding doors faced in finely woven reed or bamboo sudare panels set within dark lacquered frames — a construction specifically suited to kimono storage, where the breathable woven surface allows air circulation to protect silk garments from moisture and insect damage while keeping the contents shielded from light and dust. The lower section presents five drawers in a three-over-two configuration, each drawer faced in the same red lacquered wood and fitted with hand-forged iron warabite (蕨手, bracken-fern) bail handles — the characteristic curved form whose name derives from the young fern frond it resembles. Flat iron strap reinforcements and corner plates with square-head nail rivets are applied across the drawer fronts and case edges in the manner of Meiji-period commercial tansu production, simultaneously structural and decorative.
