She wears a layered necklace of beaded strands with teardrop pendants, and her hands are held in a graceful teaching gesture. The whole figure is covered in a pale celadon-white glaze with a dense network of fine crackle lines, so the folds of the robes show soft blue-green pooling under the glaze.

Kannon is the bodhisattva of compassion, known in China as Guanyin, and is one of the most widely worshipped figures in Japanese Buddhism. Figures like this were kept in home shrines, tea rooms and temple halls as protectors. The crackle glaze recalls Song dynasty ge-ware, a style long admired by Japanese collectors, and the carefully modeled hands, jewelry and lotus petals give the figure presence at 20 inches tall.

Form: Porcelain figure of Kannon seated on a double lotus base

Construction or Decoration: Porcelain with crackled pale celadon-white glaze; modeled lotus petals, veil and beaded jewelry; unglazed buff base

Mark:

Period: Mid Showa period, circa 1950 to 1965

Dimensions: 9.5″W × 20″H

Weight:

Condition: Crackle glaze intact, with brown staining in the crackle lines, strongest on the hands, necklace and chest.
