This is a vintage Japanese ceramic bowl known as a chawan (tea bowl) used in Japanese chado (tea ceremony). Its thick high walls make it more suitable for tea ceremony of the cooler months. This bowl was hand thrown and high fired for lasting durability. It is has a warm white base clay with a dark stylized landscape of trees and hills in gray, as an over glaze above a white crackle glaze. Inscribed by the potter (see picture 9).
This chawan measures 4 1/2" in diameter by 3" tall (11.5x 7.5 cm). Having been in storage, it remains in very fine condition.
