Antique Chinese Qing Dynasty 19th Hand Carved Wood Window Panel 39 x 58
Antique Chinese Qing Dynasty 19th Hand Carved Wood Window Panel 39 x 58
This is an antique Chinese late Qing Dynasty wooden carving with a peony, bird and motif. This hand carving has flowers in vases, birds among peonies and two panels with bats for good luck. The carving is intricately carved in yumu (a type of elm) wood.
This carving was once incorporated into a much larger part of a room design. During the Chinese cultural revolution most of these fabulous carvings were destroyed. Some were saved and warehoused until recently. As China attempts to maintain her long cultural heritage, such carvings are no longer being allowed out the country.
This carving measures 58 1/2" tall by 39 1/2" wide by 2" thick (148.5 x 100 x 5 cm). Having been well loved for nearly a century and a half, it remains in very good condition. Please view the enlarged pictures to admire this intricately detailed carving. Note that one of the panels with a bat differs from the other (pictures 7 and 8). It seems that this was a later replacement carving made to resemble the other.
