Chinese Porcelain Cricket House Famille Rose Floral Pine Longevity Hall Zhang Mark Late Qing 2.5 Inches

A delightful and finely made Chinese porcelain cricket house (蟋蟀房, xīshuài fáng) of fan-sector form, the arched opening on one face allowing the cricket to enter and shelter within. The exterior is decorated in the famille rose palette on a white ground with pink chrysanthemum, blue aster, and green foliage rendered in careful polychrome enamel; the flat lid carries a matching floral composition and is surmounted by a gilt flower-form knop. Gold enamel borders the edges and arched opening throughout. The reverse carries the maker's inscription in iron-red: 松壽堂張製 (Sōng Shòu Táng Zhāng Zhì — "Made by Zhang of the Pine Longevity Hall"), a named studio or workshop attribution that places this above typical anonymous production. Three pieces of this fan-sector form would nest together to form a complete circle within a cylindrical cage; this example is offered individually.

Miniature porcelain cricket houses of named-workshop production are among the more collectible accessories in the Chinese cricket-keeping tradition — the combination of famille rose decoration, gilt detailing, and a specific maker's mark on a piece at this scale indicates manufacture for a discerning collector market rather than everyday use.

Condition: Good; minor chips and some wear to gold enamel borders consistent with age and handling. Floral decoration intact.
