Collection: Sword Chests Katanadansu

Katanadansu (刀箪笥) are traditional Japanese sword chests used during the Edo and Meiji periods to safely store and transport samurai swords and fittings. Typically constructed from keyaki (zelkova) or sugi (cedar) wood, these compact chests feature multiple locking drawers, heavy iron hardware, and side handles for secure handling. Many were made for samurai families or sword merchants to protect valuable blades, tsuba, and polishing tools. Their bold ironwork and refined joinery exemplify the craftsmanship of Japan’s finest cabinetmakers. Today, katanadansu are highly prized by collectors for their historical significance, elegant proportions, and connection to the samurai tradition.
