Antique Japanese Bronze Door Handle Phoenix Hou-Ou Peace & Mercy 10"

This is an antique Japanese bronze door handle in the form of a Phoenix or Hou-ou 鳳凰. The casting work is very detailed with beautiful patterning in the feathers. This was likely made in the early 1900's. The Phoenix is said to bring peace and calm such that when it flies even the wind stops birds and insects quite. It is the defender of the four directions best of omens. There are 6 holes in the plate for mounting to a door. A wonderful stand alone piece of art or an outstanding piece of hardware.

The handle is about 10" long by about 4 1/4" tall. Having been carefully displayed and in storage for much of the past 100 years, with just a bit of oxidation on the bronze finish, it remains in very good condition.
