Antique Japanese (c 1900) Signed Tokkuri Sake Jug Sake & Soy Sauce Bottle
This is an antique Japanese sake jug (tokkuri) from the late Meiji Era (c.1900). This type of sake jug was one of the first recyclables in that it could be returned to the sake company that made it and be refilled. It is all hand made and fired at high temperatures for lasting durability. It has the name of the company, Yamago Shoyu (soy sauce) in Yamagata City operated by Takahashi family (see pictures 2, 3 & 4) written in blue glaze.
This ceramic jug measures about 8" in diameter by 9" tall (20 x 23 cm) and with exception of chip on the bottom (see picture 9), it remains invery good condition. It is high fire glazed both inside and out. Great as a stand alone piece of art with calligraphy or for use as a vase with a century of history. It weighs about 10 lbs.
