This is an antique Japanese rice measuring tool called an itomasu. Made the light but durable Sugi wood (Japanese cedar) and reinforced with iron straps and fitted with hand carved wooden handles or iron handles. See photos for details.

Used as a unit (1 masu) - this bucket was a standard unit used by rice stores throughout Japan in from the Edo ear into the Taisho era. The bucket held about 18 liters, or pounds of rice. On the side is usually a stamp with the name of the rice store. Many additional smaller stamps can sometimes also be seen as official symbols given by government officials - they verified and approved that this bucket is an exact standard unit - one masu.
