Antique Japanese Blue and White Porcelain Landscape Platter 10"W
Meiji period c.1870s
Dimensions: 10" W x 8.5" D
Rectangular porcelain platter with softly lobed corners, decorated in underglaze blue with a continuous river landscape scene. The central cartouche depicts a tranquil waterside village with thatched buildings, pine trees, rocky outcrops, distant mountains, and small boats moving across the water. The composition is framed by a geometric key-fret border, enclosing the scene in a manner typical of late Edo to early Meiji export and domestic wares.
The surrounding well and rim are densely patterned with a finely stippled blue ground, over which stylized floral medallions and rosettes are reserved in white. These include chrysanthemum and scrolling floral motifs arranged symmetrically around the rim, providing visual contrast and balance against the central landscape panel.
The reverse shows underglaze blue grapevine and leaf motifs spaced around the cavetto, with a neatly finished foot ring and concentric blue lines. The porcelain body is well potted, with a slightly softened glaze typical of Meiji-period production. Minor kiln grit, firing specks, and light surface wear consistent with age are present, with no major chips or cracks observed.
This type of platter would have functioned as a serving dish or display piece, and today works equally well as a decorative object or wall-mounted accent. The combination of landscape imagery, dense blue ground, and floral reserves reflects the transitional aesthetic of early Meiji ceramics, blending Edo-period decorative traditions with forms popular in the late 19th century.
