This is a Japanese antique Meiji or Edo Era (1890's) Japanese kodansu (small chest of ). This has two facing drawers built true and precise the inner tops of each drawer are chamfered to minimize the surface area and prevent the drawers sticking as the wood expands and contracts with the seasons . Made entirely of solid  sugi wood  (cryptomeria) with all wood pin construction. The top back and sides as well as the framing in the front is also sugi. The box is finished in a lovely red varnish which shows off the unique grain of the wood. The metal hardware is wrought iron with clean pulls and fittings. The method of construction, the flat unfinished bottom as well as the iron work on this Along with a century and a half old warm patina this chest remains in fine condition. This chest measures by 16'' wide by 8 1/2" tall 11" deep (40.5 x 22 x 24 cm). It weights in at over 8 pounds. A very warm accent for your home or office. Great to hold pens, as well as, remote controls for the TV and stereo.
