Antique Japanese Meiji Era (c 1900) Two Drawer Tansu Chest/Desk Zelkova Wood 33"
Dating to the late Meiji era / early 1900's, this is a special antique Japanese two drawer scholars desk made of Keyaki (zelkova) wood top and drawer faces with Sugi (Japanese cedar) wood casing. This type of bench like tansu was known as a tsukue (desk) and held writing materials and it was a perfect size to act as a desk sitting on the tatami floor. The method of construction (wooden pin) as well as all the early industrial copper handles with exception of minor signs of past use and a nice warm aged century old patina, this chest remains in good antique condition. The drawer opens and closes with ease.
