This is an Antique Japanese Kimono chest or Ishodansu. This chest was made in the mid Meiji era (1868-1912) of all sugi (cryptomeria Japanese cedar). The finish is persimmon tannin red lacquer with up to 20 coats expertly applied. Ishodansu were used to store precious kimono, obi and accessories. This chest has can be easily used stacked or separated for side by side use or even as two bedside pieces.
This tansu chest is made with pegged-tenon open-mortise corner box joint construction. This chest has all its 120 year old deep rich patina. All drawers and doors move easily without binding.
