This is an antique Japanese early Meiji Era (c. 1890 or as far back as late Edo) brown lacquer bowl that was hand turned from cryptomeria wood with over twenty layers of black lacquer. Japanese lacquer is considered the finest in the world. This lacquer was as black as could be achieved in its day but under bright light it will appear a deep rich chocolate brown.

Having been in storage for over a century, with exception to minor signs of use and minor lacquer separation on a few edges this bowl remains in fine condition are in good polish. The grain of the wood can be seen beautifully in pictures 3 and 4. The bowl measures 5 1/4" in diameter by 1 3/4" tall with lid (13.3 x 4.4 cm). This would make a great bowl for soup, salads or desserts.
