This is an antique Japanese Meiji Era serving tray, ozen. It would have been used to serve tea or small appetizers. It has ornately figured legs to raise it above the tatami floor where it was used as a small individual table (It is made of cryptomeria wood with over 20 coats of Japanese red and black lacquer.
Having been used lovingly and protected in a storage box for over a century, this tray remains overall in very fine condition. Sits squarely. This ozen measures almost 12 1/2" square by 5" tall (27.5 x 5.5 cm). A very elegant and functional piece of art to display your treasures. Please see picture #10 for the very slight separation of lacquer at the corner. NOTE other items shown in the photos are not included.
