The shakuhachi is a traditional Japanese bamboo flute known for its distinctive sound and rich history. Originally used by Zen Buddhist monks for meditation and spiritual practice, it is characterized by its deep, breathy tones and ability to produce a wide range of pitches and timbres. The shakuhachi is typically made from the root end of a bamboo culm, and its five finger holes (four in front and one in back) allow for a variety of expressive musical techniques, including vibrato, glissando, and microtonal changes. It is widely recognized not only for its role in Japanese classical music but also for its influence on contemporary music across various genres.
