Antique Signed 12 Pc Japanese Stacking Lidded Takenobento Lacquered Boxes
This is a set of 6 lidded Japanese boxes known as a takenobento bako or like a bamboo plant with segments. This set of boxes was originally used over 120 years ago for catering large feasts as each box was designated for a special food from rice to sushi. The boxes were then water tight and after the catered event they could be stacked for easy storage as each box could fit into the next larger box. When fully stacked it took little more space than a single box (see pictures 3 & 4). Each box has the makers mark branded on the inside (see pictures 10).
It is made of hand crafted cryptomeria wood with multiple coats of Japanese special natural urushi lacquer. Having been in storage for over 100 years and lovingly used, this set of 6 lidded boxes remains in very good condition. There is a signature fire branded on the inside of each lid as well as bottom of each box with the name of the maker (see picture 9).
The largest of the 6 lidded boxes measures 16" long by 13" wide and 5 3/4 " tall (41 x 33 x 14 cm). The smallest of the boxes measures 10 1/4" by 7" by 4" (26 x 18 x 10 cm). Great skill in old world craftsmanship is seen on these boxes as they have both dove tail joints as well as wooden peg construction.
