This is a ceramic bowl known as a chawan (tea bowl) used in a Japanese chado (tea ceremony). This one is in a style known as Oribe chawan. These chawan are made with a bright white clay and usually feature a signature bright green glaze applied in two spots with brown loose usually strait brush work between them. Suitable more for the winter season, it’s thick, high walls are used to keep the tea warm longer.
This chawan measures 5 1/2" wide at its widest by 3" tall.
Having been in storage for 70 years it remains in fine condition.
