Set of 3 Antique Japanese Meiji Era (c1890's) Red Lacquer Makie Wooden Mt Fuji Hawk Bowl 4.5"
This is an antique Japanese Meiji Era (c. 1890's) gold and red lacquer lidded bowl. It was hand turned from cryptomeria wood with over twenty layers of red lacquer. On top of the red lacquer there is a makie (raised gold, silver and black lacquer) designs of a majestic hawk, Mt Fuji and pine branches. Japanese lacquer is considered the finest in the world. This type of bowl was often used for soup or rice.
Having been in storage for much of the past century, and looking like it was used very sparingly, these lidded bowl remains in good polish and in good condition. There are a few minor losses to the red lacquer most notably on the rim. It measures 4.75" in diameter by 3.25" tall.
