A dramatic vintage Japanese Oni (鬼) demon mask, richly finished in layered red and black lacquer with gilded accents. Measures 11"L x 9.5"W x 5"D. This powerful sculptural mask is marked on the interior with hand-inscribed characters reading 追儺鬼 (Tsuina Oni)—a reference to the traditional Tsuina / Setsubun ritual intended to drive away evil spirits and invite good fortune..
Crafted from a lightweight carved and molded composite (traditional to festival and theater use), then hand-lacquered in an intentionally dramatic style, giving a fiery appearance and depth of tone. The surface shows wear, lacquer losses, and age patina, adding character and authenticity to a piece intended to convey fierce protective energy. Fitted with cord for wall hanging.
Oni masks are culturally significant symbols in Japan—appearing in Noh and Kyōgen theater, matsuri (festival) processions, and as protective household carvings. Their expressive features are believed to ward off misfortune and protect homes, shrines, and sacred spaces. Vintage hand-finished examples of this scale and intensity are increasingly hard to find.
A striking statement piece for collectors of Japanese folk art, masks, lacquerwork, or Shinto cultural objects.
