Kamakurabori (鎌倉彫) is a traditional Japanese woodcarving technique that originated during the Kamakura period (1185–1333), influenced by Chinese carved lacquerware. Artisans carve intricate relief designs—often floral motifs, dragons, or Buddhist imagery—into katsura or ho wood, then apply multiple layers of urushi lacquer in deep red, black, or brown, creating a rich, glossy finish. Over time, the lacquer develops a unique patina, enhancing the depth of the carvings. Used for Buddhist altar fittings, tea utensils, small boxes, trays, bowls, and furniture accents, Kamakurabori blends fine craftsmanship with artistic expression.
