This is a ceramic bowl known as a chawan (tea bowl) used in a Japanese chado (tea ceremony). It has the classic drip glaze found in Shigaraki wares from the Shiga prefecture and comes with wooden pin construction sugi wood (cryptomeria) box.
Suitable more for the winter season, it is a large deep styled chawan used to keep the tea warm longer (see enlarged pictures). This chawan measures 5 " in diameter and about 3 1/4" tall (12.5 x 8 cm). Having been in storage with limited use and protected by its sugi wood box for over 60 years, it remains in fine condition.
