This is a ceramic bowl known as a chawan (tea bowl) used in a Japanese chado (tea ceremony). It dates from the mid Showa Era. It has a bluish gray glaze over reddish clay giving it an almost purple inside parts of the bowl.
Suitable more for the winter season, it is deep styled chawan used to keep the tea warm longer (see enlarged pictures). This chawan measures 5" in diameter and about 2 3/4" tall (12.5 x 7 cm). Having been in storage with limited use for decades it remains in very fine condition.
