This is a ceramic bowl known as a chawan (tea bowl) used in a Japanese chado (tea ceremony). It likely dates to the mid Showa era in the 50's or 60's. Suitable more for the winter season, it is deep styled chawan used to keep the tea warm longer. It is done in the unique style called raku where the entire bowl is hand formed rather than turned on a wheel. The color is a very orange-brown and rather brighter than is shown in the photos.
This chawan measures 5" wide at its widest by 3" tall (12.5 x 7.5 cm). Having been in storage for many decades, this chawan remains in excellent condition.
