Antique Chinese Carved Wood Panel Fragment: Mounted Warriors in Battle, Deep Relief Openwork

This is a deep relief, pierced wood carving fragment from a piece of Chinese furniture or architectural woodwork. The scene depicts three mounted warriors in battle dress, wielding spears and halberds, carved in high relief against an openwork fretwork ground backed in red-brown fabric.

Battle scenes of armored generals on horseback were a popular subject for the deep relief friezes carved into bed canopies, cabinet panels, and screen inserts of Qing-period furniture, often drawn from historical novels and opera. The confident, undercut carving and worn surface here are consistent with age and long use before the panel was removed from its original setting.
