Antique Chinese Qing Dynasty Carved Wood Window Shutter Panel (窗扇): Fretwork Lattice with Battle Scene

This is a complete Chinese window shutter panel (窗扇), a companion to the example listed previously, carved in the same three-register format within its original wood frame. A narrow floral scrollwork band tops the panel, a central field of pierced key-fret lattice encloses a small carved vignette of two figures at a garden structure, and a wider carved battle scene of several combatants fills the bottom register.

Panels like this were hung in sets, typically four or more per window opening, to admit light and air into a traditional house while the pierced fretwork and carved figural scenes announced the household's status. The layered, three-register format with figural carving set against an openwork lattice field is a hallmark of finer Qing-period domestic woodwork.
