Chinese Blue & White Celadon-Ground Vase, Immortals 青花青釉瓶, Qing Dynasty

China, Qing Dynasty, 19th century

Height = 24 in. (61 cm); weight

A large celadon-ground baluster vase (花瓶, huāpíng) in blue-and-white (青花, qīnghuā), painted with a lively gathering of Daoist immortals (八仙, bāxiān) in a garden setting. The principal face depicts five robed figures in animated interaction — one bearded elder bearing a ruyi scepter, others gesturing in conversation or amusement against a low balustrade and rockwork ground scattered with lingzhi (靈芝) fungus. Auspicious cloud scrolls and a shou-form ruyi pendant descend from the neck. The neck carries two applied dragon-lizard handles (chilong, 螭龍) in cobalt, their scaled forms modeled in relief with characteristic Qing vigor. The reverse presents a spare spray of botanical motifs. The unglazed foot ring shows coarse sandy paste with iron spotting; the base is ungrazed and unmarked.

Condition: Repaired chip along the mouth rim, clearly visible in detail images and disclosed fully. The body is otherwise intact with no cracks or restoration detected. Celadon ground glaze remains luminous. Applied chilong handles show minor wear. Interior rim shows old dirt accumulation.

A large-scale and iconographically rich example of Qing export porcelain with strong decorative presence — the immortals subject and generous scale make this a compelling display piece despite the rim condition.
