Chinese Blue & White Porcelain Baluster Vase, Peacock & Peony, Qing Dynasty 青花瓷瓶

China, Qing Dynasty, 19th century 17 in. (43 cm) H

A commanding celadon-ground baluster vase (花瓶, huāpíng) in blue-and-white (青花, qīnghuā), hand-painted with a peacock amid peony (牡丹, mǔdān) blossoms, rockwork, and aquatic grasses rendered in vivid cobalt with skillful tonal gradation. The bird's elaborate tail plumage cascades across the belly in fine feathered strokes, each ocellus (eye-spot) articulated with precision. Flanking the waisted neck are a pair of reticulated ruyi-cloud (如意, rúyì) ear handles glazed in deep cobalt, decorative rather than functional. The reverse presents a spare floral spray against the pale celadon ground. The unglazed foot ring shows sandy buff paste with iron spotting consistent with 19th-century Jingdezhen export production. No reign mark.

Condition: A hairline crack runs across the flared mouth rim, visible in detail images; a small filled loss is present on the inner rim. The body is otherwise intact, glaze bright and well-preserved. Iron-spot inclusions in the paste are intrinsic to the period. The reticulated ear handles retain minor darkening at the piercings.

A substantial decorative vase with confident brushwork and a classic auspicious subject — peacock and peony together symbolize beauty, rank, and prosperity — well-suited to a serious collection of 19th-century Chinese export porcelain.
