This is a Chinese export porcelain plate in the Rose Canton palette (廣彩), a famille rose variant that reserves all figural painting for the central medallion and keeps the border to flowers and birds only. The gilt-rimmed roundel at center depicts a garden interior scene: a bearded scholar in a mauve robe stands before a multi-panel lattice screen and moon-gate window, attended by several women, including one kneeling with an offering bowl and another beside a smoking incense stand.

The border here is worked in a lighter, more open style than the denser florals typical of this pattern group: scattered floral sprigs on a white ground surround turquoise-ground cartouches enclosing perched birds, closed by a gilt key-fret band at the rim. The same jewel-toned enamels and heavy gilding mark this as Canton export work of the same workshop tradition supplying the Western trade through the second half of the 19th century.
