A matched pair of Edo-period Japanese abumi (鐙), traditional samurai stirrups forged in iron. These bold, sculptural stirrups feature the characteristic domed split-front design with ridged center and wide platform footrests, providing balance and stability for mounted combat and archery.
Unlike Western stirrups, Japanese abumi were designed as full-foot platforms, preventing the rider’s foot from slipping through while offering superior control in battle. Their enclosed form and heavy iron construction reflect martial utility, while their elegant shaping carries the refined aesthetic of Edo craftsmanship.
Such stirrups formed an essential part of the samurai saddle fittings (kura-gu, 鞍具), paired with ornate saddles and harnesses. This set, with its strong patina and aged surface, embodies the authentic presence of samurai horse equipment from Japan’s warrior past.
