Antique French communal fire brigade helmet (casque de sapeurs-pompiers) — all-brass construction with engraved front plate, chain chin scales, and high cimier comb
Antique French, mid-to-late 19th century
Napoleon Bonaparte reordered the various firefighting organisations in Paris into a unit of the French Army called the Sapeurs-pompiers, who wore a brass helmet with a high central crest similar to that worn by dragoon cavalry, with a frontal plate on which a badge representing their city was embossed. This style was widely copied across Europe and beyond. The communal fire brigades that followed this model throughout provincial France adopted the same form, each unit commissioning helmets bearing the name of their commune on the front plate — creating, over the course of the 19th century, a remarkable body of locally identified military-pattern brasswork.
This helmet belongs to that tradition. The French casque de pompiers featured a high central cimier crest running from front to back, strategically designed to make falling bricks and other heavy debris glance off the helmet, with a small front visor and flared rear neck guard providing 360-degree protection. Helmets often had a formal, decorative appearance featuring intricate badges, civic coats of arms, and details that reflected local pride. The front plate of this example is engraved with the inscription SAPEURS POMPIERS DE MERLE[...] — identifying the commune of origin, the full name partially worn — within a wreath of laurel and oak, crossed axes below, surmounted by an eagle or cockerel device. The high cimier comb terminates in a scrolled volute at front and a plume socket at rear; brass chain chin scales (jugulaires) with original chain intact; rosette boss cheek fittings at the temples; scalloped brass écaille (scale) trim at the brow. Interior shows original iron reinforcement rivets; liner absent.
