This is an antique Japanese Edo period (c.1800-1870) Tsuba (hand guard) for a Samurai Katana sword.
This is a very special Tsuba, its a rare museum quality piece prized by collectors. It comes with tags showing each museum exhibition it has been in. The Aorigata shape has a kozuka-hitsu-ana on the left front and a skillful engraving of the God of War (Hachiman) holding his traditional sword and storehouse in his hands surrounded by gold in layed leaves with a face of silver. On the reverse is engraved a waterfall surrounded by strong tree roots. It is signed by the artist, Sai Shinonome and indicates the school, Tsuchiya. It appears to have never been fitted to a blade.
A beautiful example of Edo Era craftsmanship.
It measures about 2 1/4" (5.5 cm) by 2 1/2" (6.5 cm) wide and 1/8" (.5cm) thick.
Having been lovingly and carefully displayed by 3 generations of collectors, it remains in fine condition.
