This is an antique Japanese meiji (c 1900) era lacquered box originally used as a bento (lunch box). This box appears to be made entirely of solid sugi wood (cider). It has one upper and one lower compartment as well as a lid. Both boxes and lid are rimmed with gold maki-covered in over 20 coats of black lacquer with all sides straight and true this box remains in fine condition. It measures 5 3/4" wide by 4 1/2" tall by 3" deep (14.5 x 11.5 x 7.5cm). A cool accent for your home or office. Great to hold any treasures that need a good home. The box has chips and scratches appropriate for its age.
