Antique Japanese Blue and White Landscape Dish with Pavilion Scene 6.25"W
Japan, late Edo to early Meiji period (circa 1850s–1880s)
Dimensions: 6.25"W × 1.25"H
A hand-painted Japanese blue-and-white porcelain dish featuring a serene riverside landscape rendered in deep cobalt tones. The composition centers on a lakeside pavilion set beneath distant mountain silhouettes, with a gnarled tree anchoring the foreground and swirling water motifs completing the scene. The shading transitions and brushwork reflect mid-19th-century interpretations of Chinese literati landscapes filtered through Japanese aesthetics.
The dish shows a softly rounded profile with a slightly raised rim and a recessed foot typical of the period. The underside is plain, with firing grit and small natural kiln marks consistent with Edo–Meiji production techniques. One small rim bruise and minor glaze wear are present, along with a single raised firing bubble on the interior surface — all characteristic of handmade wares of this era.
A classic decorative example suitable for display or study, representing the enduring Japanese appreciation for monochrome landscape painting translated into functional porcelain.
