A Japanese sometsuke (染付) blue and white porcelain plate of lobed form with a strongly potted, slightly irregular rim consistent with hand-formed late Edo provincial production. The face presents a bold central medallion enclosing a fish and crab composition surrounded by radiating cartouche panels containing alternating pictographic and geometric reserves — a layout directly descended from the kraak porcelain tradition of Chinese export ware, which entered Japanese kilns as a studied format during the seventeenth century and persisted in provincial production well into the nineteenth. The reverse carries a paneled border of similar character; the foot ring is unglazed with kiln grit adhesion.

The irregular potting, unrefined foot ring, and boldly abbreviated brushwork of this plate speak to a provincial kiln working confidently within an established format — pieces of this character carry an honest, direct visual energy quite distinct from the refinement of Arita export ware, and they are increasingly valued by collectors for precisely that quality. Fish and crab as central motifs carry associations with the abundance of the sea and the natural world; their pairing in a single medallion is relatively uncommon.
