A large Japanese sometsuke (染付) blue and white porcelain plate with a broad flat well and gently everted rim, carrying a densely composed kacho-zu (花鳥図) scene of considerable ambition: perched birds amid flowering chrysanthemum, bamboo, and cascading floral branches fill the central field, while a continuous dotted bead border runs the full circumference of the rim. The brushwork is confident and fluid, the cobalt saturated and even, with good depth in the shaded areas. The reverse carries a scrolling arabesque band and a plain recessed foot ring with no formal mark.

The kacho-zu tradition — birds and flowers as the primary vehicle for expressing seasonal harmony, natural abundance, and auspicious symbolism — was among the most enduring compositional formats in East Asian decorative art, and its application here at this scale gives the plate genuine visual presence. The birds are rendered with careful attention to posture and plumage, nested within a landscape that reads as continuous rather than compartmentalized — a mark of competent draftsmanship in the genre.
