A Japanese sometsuke (染付) blue and white porcelain plate with a densely patterned floral diaper border encircling a central reserve depicting one of the most enduring auspicious compositions in Japanese decorative art: a gnarled pine (松, matsu) rising from a rocky shore, cranes (鶴, tsuru) in flight above, and prunus (梅, ume) blossom completing the shoreline. The border — a continuous repeat of overlapping floral forms in the cracked-ice or tortoiseshell mode — frames the central scene with the density typical of Meiji commercial production oriented toward domestic and export markets. The reverse is plain with a simple foot ring.

Pine, crane, and prunus collectively carry the weight of Japan's most deeply held auspicious symbolism: endurance through adversity, longevity, and seasonal renewal. Their appearance together in a single composition was understood as a benediction, making plates of this type well suited to gift-giving, celebratory use, and the decoration of interiors oriented toward good fortune.
