Antique Japanese (C.1890) Wood & Lacquer Obon Ozen Tray Neguro Red Black
Antique Japanese (C.1890) Wood & Lacquer Obon Ozen Tray Neguro Red Black
This is an antique Japanese mid Meiji Era (c. 1890) serving tray, Obon or Ozen. It would have been used to serve tea or small appetizers. It is made of cryptomeria wood with over 20 coats of Japanese dark brown and red lacquer. The top has a two tone effect known as "neguro" in which a top coat of bergundy red is rubbed through to reveal the under red/orange layer.
Having been used lovingly for over 130 years, with the exception of minor signs of past use, this tray remains overall in fine condition. Sits squarely on floor or table. The lacquer is till in good polish.
It measures 13 3/4" square by 3 3/4" tall (35 x 9.5 cm). A very elegant and functional piece of art to display your treasures. Please note: The imari bowl seen in pictures 1, 4, & 5 is not part of this listing but can be seen in current sailerking or shoguns listings.
