Antique Japanese (C.1900) Hand Painted Ceramic Sake Cup Red Body & Gold Bowl

This is an antique late Meiji period (c. 1900) hand painted and stenciled sake cup used specifically for drinking sake. This cup is Kutani wear. Kutani ware is a pottery produced in the Kaga region of Ishikawa Prefecture and it has a history of over 350 years. It is characterized by the heavy brilliance of the five colors of green, yellow, red, purple, and navy blue that are applied to the bold and daring lines. Its long history has evolved through the tireless efforts and enthusiasm of people who have sought innovation while maintaining tradition. This cup was fired in a wood burning kiln at high temperatures for lasting durability. The bowl of this cup is covered in gold. Around the body are traditional patterns, also in gold, over a field of hand painted deep red.The bottom is marked Made in Japan in red.

It measures 2" in across by 1" tall ( 5 x 2.5 cm). Having been safely stored, it remains in good condition.A perfect size for enjoying sake.
