This is an antique Japanese two level food box known as a made of Japanese (cryptomeria) wood in the Taisho (c. 1920). Both levels nest together with a lid that fits nicely on top. It is well made with all wooden pin construction and has its original 20 coats of Japanese lacquer finish. There is a natural lacquer on the outsides of the box, red lacquer on the insides rims have black lacquer. It comes with it's original lid to cover the food when served.
Having been used lovingly and stored for most of that past century, it remains in good condition. Note some minor nicks and separation of the original lacquer finish (see pictures 8 & 9). A box with a lid measures about 8 3/4" by 8 1/8" by 3 1/2" tall (22 x 20.5 x 8.5 cm). Stacked together, these boxes measure 6 1/4" (16 cm) high. These would make a great storage box or useful for party food or an elegant meal.
