Antique Japanese (C.1920) Wood & Lacquer Obon Ozen Tray Makie Mt. Fuji
Antique Japanese (C.1920) Wood & Lacquer Obon Ozen Tray Makie Mt. Fuji
This is an antique Japanese mid Taisho Era (c. 1920) serving tray, Obon or Ozen. It would have been used to serve tea or small appetizers. It is made of cryptomeria wood with over 20 coats of Japanese black lacquer. The gold artwork is done in a style called makie (raised gold lacquer) in the form of mt Fuji with sail boats surrounded by waves and plover birds. The symbolism of plovers flying over water means a return home after a long sojourn.
Having been used lovingly for over 100 years, with the exception of some minor warping (see picture 11), this tray remains overall in very good condition. The lacquer is till in good polish.
It measures 9" square by 1" tall (23 x 2.5 cm). A very elegant and functional piece of art to display your treasures or serve a sovoury treat.
