This is an antique Japanese specialty box from the late Meiji era once used to store lacquer ware bowls or chawan. It has Japanese calligraphy on the front that is no longer legible. It was made of all Sugi wood (cryptomeria) in the tradition of old Japanese craftsmanship including wooden pins to secure the box together. This box has a lid and two compartments.

Having been used lovingly and in storage for over a century, along with a warm aged patina this antique storage box remains in good condition. It measures 10" wide by 5 1/8" deep by 9 1/4" tall (25.5 x 13 x 23 cm). Each compartment measures about 4 1/2" square.Beautiful wood grain in this Japanese cedar. A great piece of Japanese history with a wonderful warm aged patina.
