Antique Japanese C1900 Bronze Hanging Lanterns Rinto Buddhist Alter Signed
Antique Japanese C1900 Bronze Hanging Lanterns Rinto Buddhist Alter Signed
This is an antique Japanese bronze rinto or alter oil lantern c. 1900. This type of lantern was used at a butsudan (Buddhist shrine) when chanting and praying. It would burn for about 20 minutes. Very ornamental and an authentic piece of Japanese Buddhism. It is made up of many parts (6 individual components) which are all assembled into this lovely piece of functional art. The Rinto these days can also be used to display small treasures or hold small plants.
The rinto measures 11 " high by 4 1/2" at its widest diameter ( 28 x 4 1/2 cm). Having been only gently used on a few occasions nearly a hundred years ago there is only some oxidation bronze finish, this lantern remains in fine condition. The kokeshi doll in the picture is not included. This listing is for the rinto only.
PLEASE NOTE - We have over a dozen matching pairs as well as some other single lanterns. We also have countless orphaned rinto parts of all sorts. Please contact us for more details if you are interested in tops, extenders, bases, oil trays and wick holders by themselves.
