Antique Japanese c1920's Haribako Lacquered Red & Gold w/ Hidden Drawer 12.5"
This is an antique Taisho era (c. 1920's) Lacquered sewing box with an arrangement of five exterior drawers. The lidded top section is divided into two areas one covered with a lid and the other recessed with a place for a box based pin cushion a plus a secret drawer. This type of tansu chest was used to store valuables as well as equipment for the person of the house to do repairs on Kimono and bedding.
This haribako has keyaki wood exteriors and kiri pillow Japanese cedar) wood drawer interiors. Great skill was used in the workmanship in this chest. It is made with all wooden pin and dovetail construction with beaded wooden surrounds on all drawers.
This chest has been well used yet well loved, with the exception of a few minor signs of past use, it remains in very fine condition throughout. All drawers run smoothly top lidded section swings open and closed with ease. Please enjoy viewing the enlarged photos of this chest. This chest measures 12.5" wide by 7.5" deep by 10" high (32 x 19 x 25.5 cm). Very solidly built, a great piece of Japanese history and makes a great jewelry box or a classic desk top organizer today.
