This is an antique Japanese Early Showa era (c1930's) stencil transfer sake cup used specifically for drinking sake.
This cup is Kutani wear, a pottery produced in the Kaga region of Ishikawa Prefecture and it has a history of over 350 years. It is characterized by the heavy brilliance of the five colors of green, yellow, red, purple, and navy blue that are applied to the bold and daring lines. Its long history has evolved through the tireless efforts and enthusiasm of people who have sought innovation while maintaining tradition. This cup was fired at high temperatures for lasting durability. The bowl of this cup is covered in makie gold. Around the body are caligraphy in white over black. The bottom is marked in red "Kutani".
It measures 2" in across by 1 1/8" tall (5 x 3 cm). Having been safely stored, it remains in fine condition. A perfect size for enjoying sake.
