Mid-Edo Era Funadansu (船箪笥) – Ship’s Chest c.1800
Known as a Funadansu (船箪笥), this portable ship’s chest dates to the mid-Edo period (circa 1800). Constructed of solid keyaki (zelkova) with sugi (cedar) interiors, it retains its original hand-rubbed kijiro (natural lacquer) over a persimmon tannin stain, giving the wood a deep, warm glow that has developed a rich patina over more than two centuries.
The front panel opens on multiple forged-iron hinges to reveal three smooth-gliding drawers for documents, ship’s logs, and valuables. All hardware is hand-forged iron finished with a protective blackened burnt lacquer, including the decorative lock plates and handles that show fine Edo craftsmanship. Traditional wooden pin lap-joint construction reflects old-world shipwright skill, ensuring strength and portability for use on vessels sailing Japan’s inland seas.
Dimensions: 11½" W × 12½" H × 17" D (28 × 32 × 43 cm)
This chest remains in fine original condition with a beautifully aged surface, all drawers operating smoothly, and a distinctive presence that speaks of its maritime history. A functional accent for home or office, it offers both striking visual character and practical storage—built “samurai tough” for another century of service.
