Antique Japanese Blue & White Porcelain Lobed Bowl, Floral Scrolls, 6"W

Edo period, ca. 1860s

Dimensions: 6"W x 1.75"H

Hand-thrown porcelain bowl with a softly lobed rim, decorated in underglaze cobalt blue. The interior features a central floral medallion framed by scrolling karakusa vines and stylized blossoms, a classical motif associated with longevity, continuity, and refinement. The cavetto and rim are densely ornamented, creating a strong visual contrast with the open central well. The exterior is painted with flowing cloud-like scrollwork, complementing the undulating profile of the bowl.

The foot shows kiln grit adhesion and firing marks consistent with Edo-period porcelain production. The base bears a square underglaze blue kiln or workshop mark, typical of late Edo regional kilns producing high-quality domestic wares rather than standardized export ceramics.

Condition: Good antique condition. Scattered glaze wear, small firing flaws, and minor surface losses consistent with age and use. One small adhered kiln grit mark visible in the well. No cracks or restorations observed.

A well-balanced late Edo period bowl that reflects the continuity of classical blue-and-white design traditions at the close of the Tokugawa era, suitable for both study and display.
