An elegant and finely detailed antique Japanese gilt-wood statue of Jizō Bosatsu (地蔵菩薩, Ksitigarbha), the compassionate bodhisattva who vows to save all sentient beings from suffering. Depicted standing serenely atop a lotus pedestal, Jizō embodies gentle compassion and steadfast resolve, guiding souls through the six realms of existence.

This figure’s calm and youthful countenance is finished in brilliant gilt lacquer (kindei), the surface softly worn from age to reveal red and green underlayers of lacquer and pigment. The robes are intricately painted with floral and scrolling motifs in red, green, and gold, evoking the refined decorative style of late Edo Buddhist sculpture. In his left hand, Jizō holds the wish-fulfilling jewel (nyoi hōju 如意宝珠), symbolizing spiritual illumination and the granting of prayers. The right hand is lowered in the gesture of compassion and offering.

The bodhisattva stands upon a multi-tiered base featuring a large open lotus flower with gilt petals, supported by a stepped pedestal with carved and gilded relief details. The craftsmanship of both figure and base suggests temple or altar use, likely as part of a triad or devotional ensemble.
